MONDAY COMICS

I'll be starting a regular (I hope) Monday comics link to my favorite comic strips for the week. This is courtesy of www.ucomics.com, Tapestry.net and Wildgrape NewsDesk, My RSS Aggregator. Plus with the RSS feed, you get to view the archives in order without having to click on each and every link.

Adam@Home: It's so close to being a father and a husband.

Get Fuzzy: Get Fuzzy is now my personal favorite. It's humor (well, to me at least) is fresh and ummm... funny.

Calvin and Hobbes: 'nuff said.

I'm trying to get permission to post the actual strips on my site so in the meantime, I can only post the links to it. I do hope you understand.

All comics are courtesy of www.ucomics.com

SO NOT THE DRAMA

Courtesy of Gerald and my Ninang Baby who picked us up, the family went malling in Glorietta yesterday afternoon.

We had fun. Despite the fact that I only had a little over 500 in my pocket. That's barely ten US dollars these days. Let me break it down on how we spent the money:

P 275: for a small (and I mean small) stuffed Russ Puppy toy at Giftgate. They named her (him?) Chill. She's the new playmate of Puppy Puppy who's also a wee small stuffed toy.
Giftgate sure has changed. It's small now and less organized and ummm... grandiose than before. I remember proposing to Mrs. Ramos herself to help her out. After we talked, I got cold feet and never sent the proposal.

P 50: A can of Coke and Sprite for the kids. Lulu had the coke. Gabbi the sprite. I had both.

P 20: My favorite Piaya. Bought it at the stalls by Goldcrest. Nobody wanted to have some. Well, more for me.

P 80: Starbucks Capuccino (they have a Starbucks inside Rustan's now!) for me while Gerald bought a shirt. Forgot to share it with Tess.

P 50: Pad paper, a small stapler for Lulu at National Bookstore. She's now thinking of making a book now that she can staple them together. Can't wait to read it.

P 20: 2 Tokens for Gabbi who rode that little airplane ride and the "hammer" game while waiting for Lulu and Tess who were in National Bookstore.

That leaves me with around P25 and change for tomorrow. Despite that, we had a grand good time.

INDAY BADIDAY - A FILIPINO ICON

" UNLIKE the show biz world in which she ruled as queen of entertainment talk shows, Inday Badiday's wake at the Santuario de San Antonio in Forbes Park in Makati last Saturday night was a peaceful gathering of loved ones and close friends..."

All true blooded Filipinos know her. The Inday who was a true Noranian. The Inday who midwifed the career of Kris Aquino. The Inday who was THE Icon of media entertainment; in print, radio, and televsion.

We all know her. And in her passing, will always remember her. To all her friends and families, my deepest condolences.

ACTUALLY, I WASN'T AWARE OF THIS... PROMISE

"...the use of "actually" shouldn't be resorted to just to sound trendy, or sosyal, or to give us time to think of what to say next, but that it actually means something (emphasis, underscoring, revelation of something relatively unknown or unexpected, etc.)"

Actually, he's right!

Doctor Who returns to BBC1 screens

Oh yeah!

After being left in Skaro, the Doctor is back!!!! Wonder who the new Doctor is? Hope it's not the guy from that Doctor Who movie. And... any chance of a Five Doctor episode? Sorry if I got the number wrong, I know at last count it was seven but I think only five is left. Of course, we can leave out the Third (or is it the fourth?) Doctor.

Confused? You got to have watched the series to understand what I said. Well, actually, I am confused....

So after so long, do the Daleks still hate everything human?

ROCK SINGER ROBERT PALMER DEAD AT 54

"Singer Robert Palmer, known for his sharp suits and hits including "Addicted to Love," died Friday in Paris of a heart attack, his manager said. He was 54."

OK, First Johnny Cash, then John Ritter. Now, Robert Palmer. It seems that the people I grew up on are slowly passing over. Does that mean I'm old?

I don't think so. No offense, but I can't recall any Johnny Cash songs that I know of...

GUESS WHO'S BACK!

jobert pops open the CD-ROM and inserts eminem's CD (note: original copy) and plays it on musicmatch. jobert then wears earphones

After spending three days in Subic, I decided to go back home a day earlier. Called up Tess one hour before I arrived and told her to "Fire up my coffee mug!". She was so happy that I arrived.

Actually, I was thinking of surprising her but I just couldn't wait to tell her.

A lot happened there; Said no to drugs. Got drunk there on Absinthe. Fought off temptation the hard way (by not giving in, right cbs?), etc., etc. I'd probably post bits and pieces once in awhile.

Seems the biggest news these days is Kris and Joey. One thing though, it's amazing that in this day and age, a bus tragedy killing around 15 people gets a five minute report while a lover's quarrel...

Oh well, it goes to show that even News these days must be entertaining. Informative? Who cares?!

Comments about and Early Brit Reviews of Kill Bill

"...O'Hagan also suggests KILL BILL is a martial-arts action film that "crosses over into the realm of pure pastiche" by offering a pure recreation -- rather than a reworking -- of the grindhouse films Tarantino immersed himself in as a teenager. The only people who will be wholly delighted with KILL BILL, he suggests, will be chopsocky fans and the Tarantino-is-God crowd."

What's the matter? QT IS GOD!

SUBIC BAY ROCKS

Just got back from Subic (the former US Naval base is about a three hour bus ride from Metro Manila) with Tess and the kids. We spent the whole weekend there and boy did we all enjoy it! We went to Ocean Adventure (they arranged a special show just for the group since the regular show was jampacked), slept at Forest Hills, the whole shebang. We had a whale of a time.

Actually, we couldn't afford a trip like this. We went there with only three hundred pesos in our pockets! It was a vacation for the staff of Sen Serge Osmena and we were the "representatives" for my dad who couldn't come. Last year it was in Lagusnilad which was also a killer vacation. Don't know where it'll be next year.

Thing is, I'm going back there tomorrow for a four day company conference. And I am just dead tired from the trip and all!

You should have seen Lulu and Gabbi's face light up the whole time we were there. It just took my fatigue away.

Tomorrow's another story though.

AFTER THAT LONG POST BELOW: HERE'S A THOUGHT....

I think I stumbled on what Fatherhood is all about.

Being a father means finishing up that box of chocolates after your kids have bitten through half of them trying to find the good stuff.

At least, just looking at those half bitten one's I know what I'm going to get.

WHAT TO BLOG? WHAT TO BLOG?

You know, this isn't the first time I don't have anything to post. This blog seesaws between a 'link' site to a 'personal' site. It's also a Philippine Info site 'on the side'. I kind of like how it works. Besides who reads me anyway? For the three regular readers out there, the blog seems to be ok. First of all, this is therapheutic for me. Second, I get to meet really interesting people (who I consider friends now) like cbs, ghost, etc.

The first time I did this, I didn't know what to do. It was my first... first... first....

Ummmm... OK! This is about a post of list of my firsts.

In no particular order, preference, or whatever....

1. First Movie I remember watching: Disney's Robin Hood at Rizal Theater in Makati. It's gone now but that's where the Shangrila is, I also remember the Pancake house, the cafe at Rizal, Alemars, and that cool bookshop (Forgot the name).

2. First song I remember hearing: Beautiful Sunday (?). They keep playing that on Channel 9 every sunday morning(!) when they're still off the air.

3. First Cartoon: Scooby Doo. It's tied with Wacky Races (had this big crush on Penelope Pitstop) and The Funky Phantom.

4. First Book: It was an old Elery Queen Activity Book. They had this Ellery Queen TV Show on 7 then.

5. First TV Show: Uncle Bob's Lucky 7 club! He even read my letter!!! I always preferred him over Pepe Pimentel's Clubhouse 9.

6. First Computer: Commodore 64. I was choosing between an Atari 1200 (?) or the C64. Good thing I made the right choice. Although Coleco's Adam was a distant third.

7. First Computer Game: Planetfall. It was a Text based adventure game.

8. First Video game: Asteroids. Played it in an arcade where Park Square is now.

9. First Mall: Hmmm... I think it was Harrison Plaza then it burned down (first time) or was it QUAD (Glorietta I now) ? Although in fairness, Bricktown was there first.

10. First Toy: The Six Million Dollar Man Action Figure. It had Bionic Eyes (A magnifying lens). Also, the 'Space Station' that was a promo by Coca Cola. It looked like a Helicopter Propeller with a base that flies up when you pull the string ummm... of the base.

11. First Comic Book: It was a Harvey Comicbook. Li'l Henrietta I think. Or was it Wendy Witch. I was a giveaway during one of my classmate's birthday in Kindergarden.

12. First Pet: A goldfish. It died because I kept it in the freezer that summer. Imagine the maid's look when she pulled out the Nescafe jar of ice with two frozen fish in it!

13. First Appliance Broken: It was our Television, it was an RCA, when I pulled out the Channel dial and used it for a toy then lost it. Technically the TV wasn't broken but during those times when remotes where not used...

14. First Imported Candy Bar: Baby Ruth, still my favorite up to now. Local Ones? Serg, of course.

15. First Movie I saw in the US: Firefox (on HBO); Footlose (theatre)

16. First Song I heard in the US: King of Pain (Police)

17. First Out of Town visit: Calaca, Batangas

18. First Comic Strip: Peanuts. I remember having a hard time reading them when Charlie Brown would write a letter in script. I also remember those Love Is cartoons with the naked couple.

19. First Newpaper: The Daily Express... ooops no... it was the Times Journal.

20. First Local Song: Mr. DJ

21. First Tagalog Movie: Sprakenheit (?). It was Ramon Revilla and Tange

22. First Tagalog Sitcom: Tantarangtang

23. First commercial: Charlie Balakubak.

24. First Softdrink: Sarsi. I do remember RC Cola but I think I had Sarsi first.

25. First Reaturant: Sulu in Makati or was it Hizon's in Manila? I remember first champorado in Sulu and first burger in Hizon's.

26. First non-cartoon movie: French Connection (would you believe?) with my grandparents too!

27. First movie with both parents: None, although they aren't seperated.

28. First Movie with mom: See number 1

29. First Movie with dad: Star Wars (that's why that movie is special to me, we only saw 2 movies with him. The other? THe Empire Strikes Back, of course)

30. First school: NFWC in Baclaran and I still don't know what NFWC means. The owners of the school also run the funeral parlor. Talk about Six Feet Under!

31. First real food: Kare Kare. I would've eaten others but this the first one I remember asking what it was.

32. First car-ride: My grandfather's Benz

33. First plane ride: Pan Am to the US

34. First job: Night Librarian at my grandfather's school.

35. First wallet: Plastic Wallet with the 100 Peso bill printed on it.

36. First Coloring Book: Pinocchio. The generic one, not the Disney one.

37. First Crayon: 64 Color Crayola with Built in Sharpener. Naturally it should've been the 8 color one but 64 sounds more kick ass...

38. First person I met thru this blog: Geminem (formerly known as Centrino now known as Nitro)

39. First Blog I visited: Budjette's! His was the reason I started blogging.

40. First website visited: Yahoo

41. First Email address: jobert@webquest.com, it's gone now since webquest folded up.

I could go on and on but it might get too mediocre and obscure. Anyway, I might update this list from time to time. I'm probably thinking of doing a Last list. Lists are so much fun to do.

Except for those 'To-Do' lists, of course.

He brought back Travolta. He revived Pam Grier. Can he resuscitate himself? By Chris Suellentrop

I do hope Mr T nails KILL BILL. I am a big fan of his and his story from video clerk to uber-cult director is something. Here's an excerpt from that article (his describing the tension between a man and a woman, total strangers, walking in a city street where the man is walking behind the woman:

"...Is this guy going to do something? What's going on here? They're feeling it. And guys feel it too. I feel it. And I'm like, Hey, I'm just walking down the street. I just happen to be going the same way. I'm walking behind this woman, and she's thinking I'm a rapist. And now I'm feeling guilty for being a rapist when I haven't fucking done anything. So now I'm feeling guilty and feeling a little angry because I'm minding my own business. Like, I'm sorry I'm walking behind you. And she's thinking, Why the fuck can't I just walk down the street? All of a sudden there's this tension and anger about nothing."

They say he's full of himself but I've read and met people more fuller of themselves than he is and they act fuller than him... ummm... am I making sense here?

FLAT TIRES

Can't think of an appropriate title to this post so I borrowed this title from my 10th Grade English Teacher.

Anyway, Gabbi had her 6th birthday party this afternoon. She only invited her closest friends (7). NOBODY CAME. It was really dark and cloudy this afternoon and probably everyone decided not to brave it lest heavy rains come. I really felt for her because at around 5pm, I told her that we'd better bring out the cake and blow out the candles she told me not yet because her friends are going to arrive and they just lived far.

That just took the cake.

So what I did was we played all the parlour games I had lined up. Who cares if it's just us! Statue Dance, Musical Chairs, Bring Me, Simon Says, etc; the three of us (Lulu, Gabbi, and I) played them all (Tess was talking with my in-laws) and when one of us won we'd go to the prize table and picked up a prize. So at last count, Gabbi has a Beyblade, Tiara Set, Toy Truck, and a Hello Kitty Pencil Case. Lulu won a Hello Kitty Pencil Case and the Tiara Set. I won a beyblade.

So I still have 4 lootbags and a couple of prizes here. Probably we'll open 'em up tomorrow. Just don't know about those name tags.

Sometimes Life's Ups just doesn't compensates for it's Downs.

GETTING REALLY OLD

So I was online, chatting with ghost when I spied over at Mozilla that 1) Johnny Cash is dead and 2) John Ritter also died!

So I hurriedly told ghost.

She didn't know who they were.

Johnny Cash was 71, John Ritter, 54. Me? I feel really old.

THIS BLOG IS THICKER WITH WATER

It didn't occur to me but it seems my fave cousin is a regular visitor to my blog! Now if I can find the other two.... (regular visitors, I mean)

Hey Gerald!!! What's up? Don't forget, Gabbi's so-called birthday party is on Saturday. Meet you here with Ninang Baby (Ninang=Godmother). She really is my true ninang. She's been my ninang for my baptism, confirmation, boyscouts, and wedding. Atsaka Gerald, don't forget to email me the you-know-what.

Just don't be surprised if it's only us. Gabbi only invited her closest friends and they're only 7. I forgot to mention it in the invitation that it's a real small party. She wanted the small company and we sure can't afford a big bang party. But given that only 30% attend in most invitations...

See, Gerald wanted to know about my driving skills since the company issued me a car. A souped up Lancer at that. I didn't blog about my driving and sensing that I won't (til now), he opted to call and get the 411 on the story. Last time I drove was ages ago. I mean, Miami Vice was still the rage then. Pinsan! Statistically, my driving is ok. I average one bump a day. And hit one car a day. Both front and back! It's been three days so if statistics are right, once the bumping ends, I won't experience an accident the rest of my life! Dang, the car is really a wreck. Just took out the right rear light the other day.

It's so surprising the way I drive. And I was real good too with Gran Turismo.

World Famous in the Philippines

Random Stuff

1. Man! After reading the post below, I gotta say, I suck bigtime!.

2. Didn't go to work today. Didn't feel well. Thing is I get to play with the kids!!!

3. Got a big feeling this week!!! Mighty big!!! So big that I bought lotto tickets!!!

4. Gabbi's birthday is next week, it's her 6th on the 15th. She hasn't had a birthday party ever and she wants to invite 12 of her friends over. Tess took out a loan from the office so we could give her a party. She wants games and stuff. So adjustments have to be made, I'll be the host/clown together with Jerome (ooops, Ninong Jerome, that's godfather in filipino). Hope I don't get to be Chocolate Monster. Can't imagine 12 kids beating up on me pretending to be the Powerpuff Girls, Kim Possible, and Totally Spies. And finally eating me. Jerome can be the Bubbling Monster Don't know how we can pull it off on a tight budget but if number 3 works...

5. We're going to Subic on the 20th. Courtesy of my dad and Senator Serge. The kids are all excited about it.

6. Just saw the Two Towers. Really found it amusing when Sam says that by right they shouldn't even be in Gondor! Hey, they really weren't supposed to be there!!!

7. Introduced Wallace and Gromit to the kids. They really liked it. I sure know my kids!

8. Last weekend, Tess decided to clean up our cramped room. We found those old books I bought for the kids so we spent two nights reading it to them. It was real fun.

9. Last night, Gabbi couldn't sleep so with her two pillows in tow, she squeezed herself into our bed. Times like this are just precious.

10. Lulu has now started small notes she passes to everyone. Really sweet.

11. Tess and I went to Coastal Mall yesterday. We went around and kind of looked around for bargain things we can buy for Gabbi's birthday. We even had those really good Thai noodles over at the kiosk there. I had two bowls!!! Too bad they ran out of Siopao (pork buns).

Anyway, I'm going back to work tomorrow.

THE SALAD

The rain starts and I stopped.

I walked the path of remembrance
thru the gardens of forget
I picked the fruit of memories
and wallowed in the shores of emotion

How wonderful, remembering
it contorts, convolutes, and yet
it retains the emotions, not physically
but returns you to a time once met

Like that movie, it can be treachery
when things imagined gets set
reality and fantasy not distinguished
always sprinkled in that garden of forget

Honesty and courage is needed
when facing the doorway to regret
Hope and perseverance I look for
once pain and suffering I let

Yesterdays are kept in memories
As todays are the path to life
Tomorrows are the beacons of destiny
Just now I marvel at this insight

I leave the shelter of remembrance
armed with a token of courage
Truth walks along with me, I smile
The only real friend of life

The rain stops and I start.

When 'Idiot Box' is a name deserved - Sept. 07, 2003

When 'Idiot Box' is a name deserved - Sept. 07, 2003 (Inq7)

A security guard, a farmer, and an honor student. Lives that meant something. All trivialized and worse, smeared.

This article just really made me more mad about how news is done here. People tend to forget, news is not entertainment. It is a heavy responsibility.

Philippine newscasters tend to EDITORIALIZE the news. Before, news where given out straight up. Just the facts. Now, it seems that everyone has to put in a sound byte or two. What we have here are Howard Stern clones who's prime motivation is to shock. To me, that's dangerous. In a country where people are swayed by media (how many politicians here are from showbiz or tv? A LOT), a word or two from their "idol" could mean disaster in the long run. We are a country that is in danger of electing a despot to office just because he or she can sing/dance/act. If Hitler was a filipino, good looking, and acted in movies, he would have a hell of a good time here.

I could hear the hungry masses now: Here we are now. Entertain us.

06 September 2003

IT SHOULDN'T BE LIKE THIS, REALLY.

Lulu posted a comment that she's number 5 overall (last year, she ended 2 overall). That's ok. What bothers me is that I don't see them often because of my schedule. I come home and they're asleep and when they leave for school, I'm asleep.

I mean, she had to leave a comment on my blog to tell me something! That is whacked!

That comment just hit home. Maybe that's why I'm depressed. Too little family time. Not to sound preachy or anything but we have a very close and tight family life. We respect each other and really have a grand time together. You should see us, we're like The Simpsons, Addams Family and Married with Children all rolled into one. I'm the father. What do you expect?

Yesterday was cool though. I got home early and played with them, talked to them, just like old times. We even have this song.. "Eat the crunchy bacon". And when they sing it, I turn into a monster and start to chop them up into a little pieces and throw them into the "frying pan".

Before they went to bed, ghost even got a chance to meet them, including Tess (webcam). They said hi to her. Lulu even wanted me to get a microphone or something so she can say hi to my chatmates.

But still, weekends and a few moments are just not enough...

Sex Pistols Reunion Concert in the US

"For the most part, it’s a well-mannered crowd. The lights come up as Lydon walks off the stage for the second time (once again brandishing–with no real explanation–a handmade volume titled "The Book of War"). The punks stroll out, and, to their happy surprise, discover Trump Marina has a pizza place open...."

Ok so what's wrong with the review? Punk rock? Well-mannered crowd? Pizza place? The Sex Pistols?

Man, we are getting old.

05 September 2003

While chatting with a new found chocolate loving friend, Tess hands me my house clothes, meaning it's time to get off the computer. Logging off, I change (clothes, I mean).

It didn't occur to me that she handed me my oldest T-shirt I have. It's from the 1989 Prayer Tour Concert of The Cure. It's still intact although Robert Smith's face is kind of faded and there are a couple of holes (small ones) dotted around. Prior to this, my oldest was a 1985 (84?) Unforgettable Fire Concert of U2. Alas, that one was "accidentally" used to mop off some spilled milk from gabbi's bottle. Now it's MIA. I remember the shock I had when I saw that grey fabric of my music history being used as a rag. I was too shocked to be mad. I could have still used it but Tess in her guileness managed to make it MIA afterwards.

On line chatting, old t-shirts, unforgettable concerts, spilled milk. It's a weird kind of reminiscing.

*****************************

I'm in a depressed mood. I've been trying to shake it off for the longest time. But like a wave it just overwhelms my senses. I really really don't want to give in to it but MAN!!! it's really hard.

I tried daydreaming, surfing, playing with the kids, talking to my wife and friends but nothing. When the silence creeps in, bang! There it is, like an itch you couldn't reach. It's as if something really sad will happen. I do hope not.

MTV Keeps Us Safe From The Horrors of War

MTV Keeps Us Safe From The Horrors of War

"An MTV Europe internal memo gives "guidelines" for the type of content to be excluded from its programming schedule during the invasion of Iraq..."

Can you believe this? You mean to tell me that MTV is there just to entertain? Nothing more but an electronic baby sitter to countless drones? Hmmm... I am so surprised.

*WARNING - FOOT IN MOUTH - WARNING*
Honestly, I don't see anything wrong with this. I mean, if people would want to know about current affairs, they can switch to the news. Is it MTV's responsibility to inform their viewers on the current state of things? That's what school is for.

But then again... Brittney Spears was allegedly quoted;

"I get to go to lots of overseas places, like Canada."
"Where the hell is Australia anyway?"

Maybe MTV should really think if they are "censoring" the right stuff...

just ignore the ones you don't understand

III.
the darkness in my mind is soothing
it's thickness numbs my senses
i release my frustrations to the ground

i yearn for tomorrow to come
only to find out, it'll always be today

***this ones dedicated to ghost.
***blame cbsmagic for me going ballistically poetic these days. He's really contagious!
***i don't think the willy wonka post below has anything to do with this. it's just a random act of whatever...

OH NO!!!! Still got to do another one!!!!

NERVOUS CALM

the warmth of sunshine on my face
relives (relieves?) the memories of happy days
the time when problems were nonexistent
well, actually just not as insistent

a glorious phase (face?) i remember
was when i said yes to love right after december
a smile i couldn't forget
no one knows it, but it was perfection that I met
(thought i would end this with regret?)

yet i wonder what's in store
for tomorrow, is not like before
i hope it gets better, but then again
i've been asking when? when? when?

Movie Poop Shoot

If I had a Golden Ticket Ooompa, Loompa, Doopity Doo

Ok so, Johnny Depp will be playing Willy Wonka in the remake. By Tim Burton, no less! I'd bet he'd have fun playing that role but Gene Wilder's interpretation kicks major chocolate ummmm... bar none. I remember watching that movie for the first time. It was Christmas Eve (or was it New Year?) sometime 1979 (i think). Everyone was outside celebrating and I was inside watching the movie on Channel 2, when it was BBC. Not to be confused with THE BBC.

I felt like Charlie. Well, Charlie without a Grandpa Joe. Trying to get by with the few things he can afford. Trying to see the positive despite the negatives. Nothing has changed much for me. Except that I have a wonderful family who'll always be with me thru thick and thin. They are my Grandpa Joe. I wouldn't have it any other way.

Aside from Star Wars, this was the movie that influenced my life. Star Wars? It was the first movie I ever watched with my father. We only saw two, the other one? Empire Strikes Back.

We never got to watch Return of the Jedi since we already have a betamax by then.
