Philippines - Uncyclopedia

Most Filipinos (or Pinoys, as they prefer to call themselves) have a pair of eyes, ears and nostrils, two arms and legs much like humans. They pout and use their lips instead of their fingers to point to things. They can understand each other using various body languages and gestures without uttering a word. Filipinos have this secret sign called "the floating rectangle...."

This and other satirical factoids about the Philippines. Ummm... emphasis on satire.

Paul Gleason 1944 - 2006

Don't mess with the bull, young man. You'll get the horns.
And with that quote and countless others in The Breakfast Club, a legend was born.

Principal Richard Vernon.

He was played by Paul Gleason who lampooned that memorable role in Not Another Teen Movie.

Paul Gleason died of of mesothelioma, a rare form of lung cancer linked to asbestos. He was only 67.

My Condolonces to his loved ones.

The Top 25 X-Men

Over the past four decades, dozens upon dozens of mutants have called themselves X-Men. Sometimes they would be known as a New Mutant or part of X-Factor or an Exile, but they were all part of Charles Xavier's extended family. With literally hundreds to choose from, we sorted through the many mutants who have been part of an X-team over the past 40+ years...

With the XMen III movie out here in the Philippines, I guess this is an appropriate post at this time.

Oh and in case you want to know who my favorite XMen is? Well, it's Box from Alpha Flight.

Free UC Berkeley College Course Lectures

"Berkeley on iTunes U" advances UC Berkeley's history of sharing knowledge through technology. For more than a decade, the campus has made its academic content available to a limited audience. In 2001, its Educational Technology Services (ETS) division began webcasting lectures and special events to students and the public. Last year, ETS began podcasting course lectures. Since then, more faculty members have been signing on to the program.

This semester, webcast.berkeley has offered 30 courses as podcasts, including "Foundations of American Cyberculture," "Introduction to Chemistry," "Wildlife Ecology" and "Introductory Physics."

This is an awesome find. Instead of listening to music why not jump over and listen to "coursecasts" and expand your knowledge?

5 ways to start a company (without quitting your day job)

...working for a corporation affords access to several things that are vital to a fledgling company: money, customers, market research, personnel. And it turns out that many former wage earners have successfully exploited these resources -- legally, and in some cases with the assistance of their employers -- to realize their entrepreneurial dreams. Some actually built their startups while working for someone else, while others simply tapped previous employers' people and cachet.

All of them, however, learned to look at salaried life as a springboard rather than a prison. Daniel Curran, a management consultant who lectures on entrepreneurship at UCLA, suggests, "When you come across hidden customer demands in your job, turn them into a business."

So, you want to start your own company. Mozy on over, maybe this site can help.

How The Da Vinci Code Doesn't Work

It's no secret that the HowStuffWorks staff likes to take things apart and see what makes them tick. Some of us are also the kind of sticklers who point out science and technology mistakes in TV shows and movies, much to the chagrin of the people listening. But when we heard about the controversy surrounding "The Da Vinci Code," we couldn't resist picking it apart.

In this article, you'll learn what happened when we took a close, hard look at "The Da Vinci Code" and how it uses science, technology, art and history

Before you go out and watch the "The Da Vinci Code", read this. Impress your date by telling her things like, "You know, that can't happen. The Louvre uses liquid soap in their restrooms. Not soap bars...".

I hear the theaters here in the Philippines are packing them in. Except of course in the city of Manila where it is reported that empty headed, hypocritical politicians banned the movie at the behest of catholic nut jobs who think that the FICTIONAL movie is porn.

I may have finally stumbled upon the real reason Catholic priests are against the movie. You see, the movie made the assumption that Jesus Christ is married and may have had children which is as untrue as the assumption that most Catholic Priests are straight and do not molest children...

The top 10 sci-fi films according to Scientists

The following scientists were interviewed for their views on science fiction films and books by Alok Jha, Kate Ravilious, Adam Rutherford, Helen Soteriou and Paul Tadich. A few chose to nominate only films, and a few only authors. Films and authors with most nominations made it into the top 10. Where results were tied, the Life editorial team had the casting vote:

The top ten sci-fi films according to scientists. It's a pretty good list. Except for number 5 and 7 which I haven't seen, I've watched all the movies on the list at least five times.

Come to think of it, there never has been a decent Philippine sci-fi movie.

FBI Top 11 Deaths of the Year

Every year the FBI is asked to investigate over 36,000 Serious Crimes including Suspicious Deaths and Homicides. And the Homicide Investigations Unit puts out its Top 11 Homicides of that year.

1- Debby Mills-Newbroughton, 99 years old, was killed as she crossed the road. She was to turn 100 the next day, but crossing the road with her daughter to go to her own birthday party her wheel chair was hit by the truck delivering her birthday cake

Free calls to all landlines and mobile phones within the US and Canada

We just announced that SkypeOut is now free within the US and Canada to all landlines and mobiles, until at least the end of 2006.

Too bad it doesn't apply to calls from outside the US. But then again, I wonder if the Google Web Accelerator can help out with this?

GRAHAM CHAPMAN'S MEMORIAL SPEECH

MLQ is going to love this...

GRAHAM CHAPMAN'S MEMORIAL SPEECH
Delivered by John Cleese at his memorial service, Jan 1990

Graham Chapman, co-author of the 'Parrot Sketch,' is no more.

He has ceased to be, bereft of life, he rests in peace, he has kicked the bucket, hopped the twig, bit the dust, snuffed it, breathed his last, and gone to meet the Great Head of Light Entertainment in the sky, and I guess that we're all thinking how sad it is that a man of such talent, such capability and kindness, of such intelligence should now be so suddenly spirited away at the age of only forty-eight, before he'd achieved many of the things of which he was capable, and before he'd had enough fun.

Chapman died at the age of 48 on 4 October 1989. He died of pneumonia brought about by throat cancer. I didn't know this until today. Almost 17 years ago... And I profess myself to be a Python Fan. Feh!

Anyway, Graham is known for his role as Brian in The Life of Brian, and as King Arthur in Monty Python and the Holy Grail.

Go check out John Cleese's Eulogy. It's both funny (and I mean laugh out loud funny) as well as touching.

And here's the MLQ moment... The Google Video of The Dead Parrot Sketch. Enjoy!

My fifteen minutes of fame... start counting down

As I have mentioned before, I'm on radio every monday night on Magic 89.9. That's 9pm to 12 midnight, Philippine time.

Well it seems to be doing well as I have become sort of the regular pest there even on other days. Even pinch hitting for Mojo who was off for one day. I was surprised to see the newspaper write up for the radio show include my name on it. Click the link and be surprised to find out what I really do on the show.

As DJ Mo would say, Good Times.

One step closer to World of Warcraft Philippines

THE NEW joint-venture company formed by the Philippines' IPVG Corp. and Singapore-based regional game distributor iGames Asia Pte Ltd says it is looking beyond the current dominance of online games in the Philippines as it prepares to launch a number of premiere PC titles in the country.

...Gonzalez said they are now reviewing titles from the entire product lineup of iGames in Singapore. iGames Singapore is the regional distributor of game publishers such as Microsoft Game Studios and Vivendi Universal Games; Brittanica.com; and casual games from Boonty. It also launched World of Warcraft in Singapore in partnership with Blizzard Entertainment.

Gonzalez declined to comment on whether the joint-venture company would also bring in World of Warcraft to the Philippines.

Wow! And I mean Wow Philippines! World of Warcraft Philippines!

I do hope that after years of waiting, World of Warcraft Philippines is close to becoming a reality.

In all honesty, I could buy a copy but there isn't any available here in the Philippines at the moment and even if it is, it's too expensive.

Any kind soul out there would want to send me one over? I'd name the character I played after you or any name you choose. Honestly.

I'm so desperate, I'd even use the character of your choice...

Heat: The Videogame

The stars and director the 1995 heist thriller "Heat" are in talks to contribute to a videogame spin-off, according to the project's developers.

The film starred Al Pacino and Robert De Niro as characters on the opposite side of the law, and included the first scene in which the two actors ever appeared together.

Heat. The best shoot out scene in a movie. Bar none.

Flock of Seagulls Interview

In the 1980's you couldn't turn on MTV without seeing A Flock of Seagull's "I Ran" video. The song has become a part of pop culture history and has been featured in Adam Sandler's "The Wedding Singer" and the videogame "Grand Theft Auto: Vice City". The group followed up "I Ran" with two other well loved '80s singles "Wishing" and "Space Age Love Song". On the brink of two upcoming '80s invasion concerts in Stockton & Bakersfield California Mike took some time to speak with us.

The Flock of Seagulls... that just brings up 80's memories like no other.

In the Philippines, they were also famous for the song "The More You Live, the More You Love".

Wow

This is totally unintentional but still, cool...

Because of all these Inquirer links, my website isn't XHTML 1.0 compliant. Can someone over at INQ7 fix this.

I'm beginning to get obsessive compulsive about it...

After nurses, it's pharmacists...

INDUSTRY experts on Tuesday warned of another looming exodus, this time, involving pharmacists who number only more than 4,000 at present.

In the next 10 years, the United States alone will need some 60,000 pharmacists, according to Yolanda Robles, president of the Philippine Association of Colleges of Pharmacy.

Hmmm... so now the next big thing to get into is Pharmacy.

Heck, with the proliferation of illegal drugs in the Philippines, there's a pharmacist in every corner. If you get what I mean...

The Da Vinci Code movie is Porn?

AN anti-pornography group yesterday said it will file a complaint today against the Movie and Television Review and Classification Board for allowing the importation of the film “The Da Vinci Code.”

Well, all i could say is that somebody give this group a calendar. Maybe they have this notion that they're still in the 19th century. Maybe they even were born then...

LIPA Archbishop Ramon Arguelles has urged Philippine film censors to ban in local theaters the Hollywood film “The Da Vince Code,” dismissing it as blasphemous.

I guess freedom of speech (well, to a degree, it is freedom of speech, right?) is not included in the Holy Bible.

South Park Kids Real Life Sketch

This is the composite sketch of the South Park kids, Kyle, Stan, Eric and Kenny. This was from the Killer Whale episode. In case you didn't catch it.

It's great to know that even after all these years, South Park has been consistently funny and relevant. Anyway, Cartman is spot on, don't you think?

The Da Vinci pitch

How do you create anticipation for a movie when 50 million readers already know the plot? Jill Stark lays bare the dark arts of marketing that have kept The Da Vinci Code brand in the news.

Philippine PR people wouldn't have any problems with this.

Philippine movie trailers basically almost shows the whole movie. All you need is to sit thru one. The reason for watching a Philippine movie? To watch your favorite parts that you saw on the trailer!

Why do we say 'um', 'er', or 'ah' when we hesitate in speaking?

Not everyone says "um", "er" or "ah" when they hesitate while speaking. It depends upon the language.

For example, speakers of Mandarin Chinese often say"zhege" which roughly translates as “this”. In English we say "um", "er", "ah", or other vocalisations for reasons that linguists are not entirely sure about. "Um", "er", and “ah” contain what linguists call "neutral vowel sounds" making them among the easiest sounds to make.

Watching all the talk shows here in the Philippines, I think ummm, errrr, and ahhhh are part of the showbiz lingo here in the ummm... Philippines

Nokia Secret Codes and Hacks

These codes for the Nokia series of phones provide some interesting information for users, they also unlock some hidden functions. These codes are often reffered to as "Nokia Secret Codes" or "Nokia Hacks". Use the codes at your own risk, not all Nokia phones support all codes, I have tried to split them into these groups.

In the Philippines, the majority of the cell phone users here has a Nokia. I prefer Siemens though.

So Nokia users, Hack away my dears. Hack away.

Da Vinci's Last Supper in Hi Resolution

You will find this great work of art that Leonardo da Vinci was commissioned to paint by Ludovico il Moro, from 1496 to 1498, in the refectory of the Dominican convent of Santa Maria delle Grazie, outside the church a door, on your right, will lead you into it. The Last Supper painted by Leonardo da Vinci is ingeniously devised as an expansion of the perspective of the space in which it is set (1495-1497). It is one of the most famous works of art in the world, and has long been an icon of Western civilization. The scene portrays the moment in which Jesus tells his disciples that one of them is about to betray him.

Click the link to see a super hi resolution of the painting. You can amazingly zoom in to see the fine details of the painting.

If you're planning to watch or read the Da Vinci Code, bookmark this and return to it to appreciate both the story and the painting.

I'm still waiting if the Catholic Church here in the Phililppines would do something ummm... "unchristianly" to block the movie...

Hungary workers get shock at bottom of rum barrel

BUDAPEST (Reuters) - Hungarian builders who drank their way to the bottom of a huge barrel of rum while renovating a house got a nasty surprise when a pickled corpse tumbled out of the empty barrel, a police magazine website reported.

They say this is an urban legend, a hoax. But what if it was real?

Well, in the Philippines, some tribes would store their dead in big jars and pickle them with spices. They don't eat them though, it's just how they are ummm... mummified? Or so I heard.

The best tip for digicam owners!

Picture this: You've dumped all those arcanely named photos from your camera to your PC. But rather than leave them with names like IMG0484.jpg, you'd like them to have descriptive titles like VacationToParis1.jpg. Sounds good, but manually renaming files in Windows one at a time is a massive pain in the backside

This by far is the most useful tip, specially when you have a ton of pictures to download...

Just like the rest of the world, the Philippines is becoming digicam crazy but moreso than that, it's becoming cameraphone crazy so this tip is a godsend.

Some of these TV shows are not available in the Philippines so it's a windfall for me.

Want more ad earnings? Referrals spruced up with Google Pack and Picasa

You'll earn up to $2 for each time a user installs Pack and up to $1 for each Picasa install. Although Picasa referrals will be available for several AdSense languages, Pack referrals are currently only offered in US English.

Picasa is one fine piece of software. I've been using that since Google first offered it.

Seriously, it's no joke nor is it a come-on. Picasa truly rocks.

Having a Bad Day?

The next time you're thinking you're having a bad day, think about this:

The average cost of rehabilitating a seal after the Exxon Valdez oil spill in Alaska was $8,000. At a special ceremony, two of the most expensively saved animals were released back into the wild amid cheers and applause from onlookers. A minute later, in full view, a killer whale ate them both.

***********

Iraqi terrorist, Khay Rahnajet, didn't pay enough postage on a letter bomb. It came back with "return to sender" stamped on it. Forgetting it was the bomb, he opened it and was blown to bits.

***********

Two animal rights protesters were protesting at the cruelty of sending pigs to a slaughterhouse in Bonn Germany. Suddenly the pigs, all two thousand of them, escaped through a broken fence and stampeded, trampling the two hapless protesters to death.

Lot more laugh out loud stories here guaranteed to cheer you up. Reading the news here in the Philippines can drive one to either a mental hospital or to suicide.

Writely Nominated for two Webby Awards

We recently found out that Writely has been nominated for two Webby Awards in the Best Practices and Service categories. This is a big honor, and we'll find out in just a few short weeks whether we will win. We would be extremely psyched to win one of these awards.

It turns out that there are actually two sets of awards: one for the official Webby Winners (judges select these) and another for the Webby People's Awards Winners (you online voters choose these). I figure if every happy user votes for Writely, we could have a chance to win that People's Awards hands-down.

Click the Link and vote for them. They're listed under the Best Practices Category. Oh and are there any Philippine websites being nominated?

Writely has been a lifesaver for me at least twice now. It's a real useful app. I found out about their nomination from their blog. This is the least I could do for them...

Apply to become a double-o agent

MI6, the U.K. intelligence service made famous by the James Bond films, is advertising in newspapers for the first time in its 97-year history, in order to recruit more spies, administrative employees and linguists.

The Secret Intelligence Service, as the agency is officially called, introduced a Web site in October to enhance public knowledge of the SIS and to boost recruitment. The advertisement is intended to broaden the hiring initiative, appealing both to those who may want a career change and to new graduates.

I wonder if recruits are given Walther PPKs, Austin Martins and get to drink a martini...

Me? I'd settle for an undercover job ummm... covering the World Cup finals.

In the Philippines, being a secret agent means being immune to the law, I think.
