23 Nation Poll: Who Will Lead the World?

A public opinion poll across 23 countries finds that in 20, a majority (17) or a plurality (3) of citizens think it would be mainly positive for Europe to become more influential than the US in world affairs. Currently, Europe is seen as having a mainly positive influence in the world in 22 countries. Among specific major countries, the one most widely viewed as having a positive influence is France—viewed positively in 20 countries. The countries most widely viewed as
having a negative influence are the US (viewed negatively in 15 countries) and Russia (14 countries).
...The only countries where a majority sees this prospect [Europe being the World Leader] as negative are the Philippines (54%), and the US.

Well, that being said, it seems we Filipinos favor the US to lead the world. You think it's because people here know who Brad Pitt who is more than let's say, Jean Reno?

Actor Don Knotts dies at 81

LOS ANGELES, California (AP) -- Don Knotts, who kept generations of TV audiences laughing as bumbling Deputy Barney Fife on "The Andy Griffith Show" and would-be swinger landlord Ralph Furley on "Three's Company," has died. He was 81.

Too bad. Another great comedian has passed on.

Davinci Code Dialogue

TheDaVinciDialogue.com is a website offering informative essays by a broad array of leading Christian scholars, pastors and educators addressing many of the historical and theological issues touched on in The Da Vinci Code. The essay writers represent an eclectic group of experts from Roman Catholic, Orthodox and Protestant traditions. The site was launched on February 9th, 2006.

I wonder how the movie will turn out. Expect the Catholic Church to go fire and brimstone with this.

Cell Gunphone Discovered - Threat to Security?

At first sight it looks like a regular cell phone — same size, same shape, same overall appearance.

But beneath the digital face lies a .22-caliber pistol, a phone gun capable of firing four rounds in quick succession with a touch of the otherwise standard keypad.

The US Department of Homeland Security and the FBI are aware of the device and have instructed baggage screeners to be on the lookout for suspicious mobile phones. This is especially after 9/11.

You think this is 3G enabled? Wonder what the resolution of the camera is...

Blogs to Riches

...Hauslaib took a good look at Gawker, a gossip site owned by the high-tech publisher Nick Denton. Gawker’s founding writer, Elizabeth Spiers, had pioneered a distinctive online literary style and earned a large following in the Manhattan media world. What really got Hauslaib’s attention, though, was Gawker’s advertising-rate sheet. According to Denton, the site received about 200,000 “page views” a day from readers. The site ran roughly two big ads on each page, and Gawker said that it charged advertisers $6 to $10 for every 1,000 page views—almost the same as a midsize newspaper. There was also a smattering of smaller, one-line text ads bringing in a few hundred bucks daily. Doing a quick bit of math, he figured that the income from Gawker’s ads could top $4,000 a day. The upshot? Nick Denton’s revenues from Gawker were probably at least $1 million a year and might well be cracking $2 million....

It seems the whole blogging community is almost obsessed with profiting from their blogs. It's all search engine optimization and stuff. Well, this article delves on that. This could be useful to for those armchair SEOs.

THE Integrated Bar of the Philippines should take up the cudgels for the victims of the landslide and consider filing a class suit against illegal loggers whose destruction of the forest cover in Southern Leyte may have contributed to the catastrophe, Senate Minority Leader Aquilino Pimentel Jr. said yesterday.

Arroyo: I'm best person to lead

COUP ATTEMPTS and "sham" people power will be a thing of the past should the country shift to the parliamentary system, according to President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo, and by her own reckoning she is the best person to lead the transition..."And let me also make clear: I believe I am the best person to lead this nation through this transition," she said....

Lead the transition... she around six years in her belt and we're still in transition?

Oh you mean change of government. I thought it was a transition from bad to worse...

In the Philippines, Coffee is healthy!

I get back to Manila and practically the first thing I see is an ad proclaiming coffee as a health drink. WHAT the. It was so disconcerting, the coffee I'd been drinking shot out of my nose.

According to the ad, coffee contains more antioxidants than anything on earth, plus if you buy their brand you support local coffee farmers, seen in the background picking coffee beans in their pink uniforms (the farmers, not the beans).

Coffee?! Healthy?! It's enough to make me swear off caffeine altogether...

After coming back from Sundance and a brief restover in New York, Jessica Zafra is surprised to see an ad extolling the health benefits of coffee. Just barely a month out of the country and she's experiencing culture shock!

Makes me remember McDonalds ad on pregnant women craving for their products.

Maybe the health benefits can mostly be seen in the fat wallets of these companies...

Blast Rocks Palace

Ummm... chemical chain reaction... no breach in security.

The day this becomes truly believable is the day that coffee is healthy for us.

Haunted Places in Philippines

Baguio City - Diplomat Hotel - This was a Seminary during the early 1900, world war 2 came and several priest and nuns were killed some of them beheaded by japanese occupying forces. This was converted into a hotel after the war. In it self it was pretty eerie, big rooms with to king size beds bibles at the side tables and the rooms are dimly lit. Clerks, bell hops, and hotel guest, complain of wailing even during day time, and when night comes, apparitions of headless priest roam the corridors, some even say that they see ghost carrying their heads on a platter. Haunting s are not limited inside the hotel for when you stroll outside the compound you would see neighboring houses with crosses painted on their doors and windows, and are kept shut when darkness falls.

This and tons of other haunted places in the Philippines. If you want to start on a ghost hunting trek this could be one of the sites you'd go to initially. This site covers the haunted places all over the Philippines. It's a cool read specially at night when you're all alone and only the light of your monitor and the sound of your PC fan to keep you company.

I'm just waiting for those Ultra Victims to start haunting that place. The ULTRA Stadium I mean...

PDI on the Separation of Church and Press

In bending over backwards to appease "religious correctness" PDI only ends up dividing Freedom of Religion from Freedom of the Press and separating them from their indivisible source -- the democratic Right of Free Speech and Expression. To believe in God is as sacred a right as to believe in anything else. To express a religious belief by "practicing a religion" is no different than to publish a column to express a private opinion or belief.

In the Philippines, God and Jesus has the power to endorse political candidates. They (HE?) even can jump start a revolution. And also bring down the m*th3rf*ck1ng wrath of ummm... God to anyone who dares oppose them (HIM?).

Of course, this is what the Church says...

Top 10 Web Moments of 2005

In December 1990 there was a single web site on the Internet, and by the end of 1991 that figured had jumped to ten. Today there are millions of sites and billions of pages, and the web is a universe unto itself. It's impossible for any one person to keep track of even one percent of the interesting stuff happening on the web, but still we try until our favorites folders are overflowing, our social bookmark sites crash, and our inboxes choke on forwarded links. Occasionally, though, all of that collective interest organizes itself into something more orderly and, for a moment, it seems like everyone on the web is thinking about the same thing. Below are ten moments from the past year that the people who make the web found coolest, most interesting, funniest, and most throught-provoking.

Student finds toilet water cleaner than ice at fast food restaurants

New Tampa, Florida - 12-year-old Jasmine Roberts is a seventh-grade student at Benito Middle School in New Tampa.

When it came time for her to choose a science project, she wondered about the ice in fast food restaurants.

Jasmine Roberts, 7th-grade student:
"My hypothesis was that the fast food restaurants’ ice would contain more bacteria that the fast food restaurants’ toilet water."

So Roberts set out to test her hypothesis, selecting five fast food restaurants, within a ten-mile radius of the University of South Florida.

And that's in the US! I wonder how that would fare here in the Philippines. Someone should do a study...

How to Almost Live on Blogging

In his new book, Google Advertising Tools, Harold Davis addresses the company's keyword advertising program, concentrating on how bloggers can manipulate it to their benefit.

In a recent interview with Wired News, Davis shared some tips for aspiring online publishers.
Here's an excerpt:
WN: What do you need to start a profitable blog?

Davis: You should have at least 100 pages of high-quality content in the can. Blogs are good because they keep content fresh, but that's just a small part of it. Good reference material really draws traffic. On a photography site I run, for example, one piece I wrote on how to convert raw digital photos draws more traffic than 99 percent of my other photo pages.

I blog to relieve stress and to post things I think would be useful to me later on. Getting something on the side is more of an incentive for me than anything else.

I’ve asked that of a lot of people over the last month and while some come up with an answer, most simply furrow their brows, put their hands on their hips, look at the ceiling and say, “Isn’t that funny.” And not just the guys either.
Even I have a hard time recalling a truly memorable movie kiss. And I have spent half my life watching movies.

I know, i know. It takes a brain to recall things...

GILAS: Connecting Philippine Public Schools to the Net

The digital divide in the Philippines is unacceptably wide. Only about 6% of public schools have facilities that give students Internet training and access. Only 39% of the country's 5,443 public high schools have computer equipment platforms that can be wired to the Internet. In contrast, most Philippine private schools provide both access and formal training on the computers and internet-based research for their students...

GILAS aims to deliver

. Internet access for schools with computer labs
- Servers or routers, LAN cards, cables
- Provision of connectivity and unlimited free Internet usage for the first year
. 10 computers and Internet access for schools without computer equipment
. Basic training
- Training for teachers and administrators on networking and resource mobilization
- Formulation of basic curriculum and year-long lesson plan
. Maintenance
The current estimated cost of the project is USD 28 million (HKD 224 million). The current estimate of connecting schools that have existing computer labs is USD 2,000. For schools without computer labs, the estimated total cost is USD 6,000.

Let's all join hands and help out. We're sure to see the fruits of our kindness in a couple of years.

Joey De Leon defends himself

After the Wowowee Tragedy that happened at ULTRA last week, Text messages came out saying that host, Joey De Leon, of rival noontime show Eat Bulaga made fun of the incident. He supposedly said that it's better to watch their show since no one dies there or something like that.

Talk about wagging the dog.

Well, he came out and defended himself. Very emotionally in fact. He never did anything close or similar to what he was accused of doing. And he did point out three things:

1. He does not present himself as a god who can ease poverty. (He also warned the viewers about self proclaimed "saviors", like that.)
2. There are no raffle tickets in Heaven.
3. People should really look at the reason behind the reason a lot of people where at the ULTRA that day. It would give them a better perspective on things.

Honestly, Joey De Leon is a real smart person. He is not presumptious, pompous or even boisterous. For people to pick on him to sway the attention from the Wowowee Tragedy is really really low.

Oh by the way, after praising Willie Revillame to high heavens, has ABS-CBN News air a report or segment clearing Joey De Leon?

But then again, what good would it do them? I mean, who would benefit most from this false accusation?

I'm just asking...

Catalog of Philippine Names

One of the more obvious marks left by Spanish rule in the Philippines is the prevalence of Hispanic surnames among Christianized Filipinos. Those who lived in remote areas and were not subjugated escaped this fate. Many people in the mountain areas of Luzon, Mindanao, Mindoro, Palawan, and other places retained their way of life, their culture, and their way of naming themselves. Thus, a Yam-ay in Mindoro today does not have a name like Claudette Villanueva as would probably have been the case had she lived among the conquered people.

Before the Spaniards arrived, a person's second (family, not middle) name was usually taken from one of his children. Thus, Timbô who had a son named Pitík was known as Timbô, amá ni Pitík. Compare this with the Western custom of sons taking their names from their fathers like Peter, son of John, or Peter Johnson. Sometimes, a physical feature was used to describe a person like Pitong Kirat for a certain Pito who only had one good eye.

Many early Christianized Filipinos named themselves after the saints so much so that it caused consternation among the Spanish authorities. Apparently, Christianization worked much too well and there were soon too many Santoses, San Joses, San Antonios, and San Buenaventuras to suit those in power. They were forced to change their last names unless they could prove that their family had been using it for several generations.

...And so, on November 21, 1849 Governor General Narciso Clavería ordered a systematic distribution of family names for the natives to use. The Catalogo Alfabetico de Apellidos was produced and approved names were assigned to families in all towns. Name distribution was so systematic that civil servants assigned family names in alphabetical order causing some small towns with only a few families to end up with all names starting with the same letter. (This interesting situation remained until fairly recent times when people became more mobile and started seeking mates from other towns.)

It's a list of Philippine names that remained in use even after the Clavería edict.

Google Adsense Explained

Ever wonder what determines the order in which ads appear on your site? Then you've wondered about the Google AdWords ad ranking system. AdWords is the advertising platform thousands of advertisers use to place their ads on the Google network. Once an ad is in the AdWords system, it competes against other ads to appear on relevant pages in the AdSense network. It's through this real-time dynamic auction system that ads are ranked. Those ads with the highest Ad Rank at any given moment are displayed on your site.

So that's how it works. As you can see, it's a REAL slow post day...

ABS-CBN asking stampede victims to sign waiver

TELEVISION network ABS-CBN has been asking victims of a deadly stampede on February 4 to sign a waiver in exchange for financial assistance, a top official of an anti-crime group revealed.

...This waiver states that they will receive a specific amount, but it also contained a paragraph that said that they would not file [a] suit against them...

Quoting the victims, Vizconde said the financial aid ranged from 5,000 pesos to 50,000 pesos.

So the plan here is to get money from ABS-CBN then sue them to get even more money from ABS-CBN.

I think the next step is to then go to government and ask for more money.

Dang! This is like winning in a game show!

Lookalikes

Ok this is an ego post so there's nothing to see here.

Just move along.. move along...

Still here? Oh well, I warned you. After this, you better whip up a spoon and start carving my heart out since you'll be thinking I'm so full of myself.

Why a spoon? Ask Alan Rickman.

Anyway, in the early nineties, I've been getting calls and comments from people who just saw Demi Moore's Indecent Proposal. The first thing they'll shout out is that there's this actor there who just talks like me. Acts like me. And looks like me.

And it's not Robert Redford or Woody Harrelson.

It's Oliver Platt.

Well, that was years ago, and I was flattered.

Now fast forward to now. Last month, it's the same thing. Calls and comments after watching King Kong. And no, I do not remind my friends of Andy Serkis. Although, I can do a mean Kong. Really.

Wait, i'm digressing again. Where was I? Oh yeah, now and Kong. Anyway, now, people say they remind me of Jack Black. Now that is so cool! It's so cool that I have mulled these past weeks whether to post it or not. For posterity you know. Jack Black. I'm not really a dead ringer. I'm miles from it. But people say it's how I talk and act that just gets them. Specially his role in King Kong...

Well, with no offense with old Jack. I feel like I know him now. Now, if only I can grow a beard. It's an Asian thing you know.

Oh and I wonder how close I was to being mistaken for Kong? I'd say pretty close.

Spiders.

Spiders are the most interesting animals ever! Join me while I explore the many qualities and types of spiders.
Spiders are often classified as insects but in fact they are not insects they are arachnids. Although spiders are not insects they are both part of the largest group of animals on this planet called arthropods. Arthropods are animals with hard external skeletons and jointed limbs. All
Arachnids heads and thorax are combined (cephalothorax). They have simple eyes, and jaws adapted for tearing or piercing prey. They each have a pair of pedipalps and eight walking legs. Spiders are the only arachnids that have special glands in their abdomen which produce silk

It's a Spider Blog! Who would have thunk...

Oh and the spider image is that of a Funnelweb spider. Go visit the blog to learn more about it and other arachnids. It's fun if you're not arachnaphobic.

Here Lies Love

Here Lies Love – A Song Cycle deals with the life of Imelda Marcos, co-ruler of the Philippines in the 70s and 80s, as well as the life of Estrella Cumpas, the woman who raised her.

Through a series of songs written by David Byrne, with musical contributions from Fatboy Slim (Norman Cook), Here Lies Love – A Song Cycle presents Imelda Marcos meditating on events in her life, from her childhood spent in poverty and her rise to power to her ultimate departure from the palace. In particular, the production looks at the relationship between Imelda and a servant from her childhood, Estrella Cumpas, who appeared at key moments in Imelda's life.

Whoa! I never saw someone refer to Imelda Marcos as co-ruler of the Philippines. Well, not officially of course. Expect the usual ballyhoo from the usual ballyhooed.

If I may, the song Road To Nowhere by The Talking Heads can best summarize the present GMA Administration. Did I just hear someone shout out Money For Nothing by Dire Straits? No one. Dang! Those voices again...

Presidents of the Philippines

This is a look at our governments during the various periods of our history and their significance in our Nation's development. From Aguinaldo's time until the present, the Philippine Republic has undergone five fundamental changes, That is, for each Republic a new Constitution was drafted. This series divides the last hundred years into periods roughly divided by these five phases in the changing Republic including two other transitional phases in its history so as to provide a cohesive continuum of events.

Hmmm... didn't PCIJ violate this one way or another? Either that or they didn't credit their source correctly...

State of the Blogosphere

The blogosphere is over 60 times bigger than it was only 3 years ago.

New blog creation continues to grow. We currently track over 75,000 new weblogs created every day, which means that on average, a new weblog is created every second of every day - and 13.7 million bloggers are still posting 3 months after their blogs are created. In other words, even though there's a reasonable amount of tire-kicking going on, blogging is growing as a habitual activity. In October of 2005, when Technorati was only tracking 19 million blogs, about 10.4 million bloggers were still posting 3 months after the creation of their blogs.

DoJ: Revillame may be liable as show host

Revillame declined to comment on Gonzalez’s statement, saying he needed to talk to ABS-CBN Broadcasting Corp. first. But he told the Inquirer that he was merely the game show’s host.

Ok... let me get this straight, yesterday Willie was all torn up blaming himself for the tragedy. Everyone came to his side and told him it wasn't his fault.

Now that there might be a case he's saying that he's just a host?

Dude, he should have gotten a lawyer from day one. I mean just for advise or something...

ADDITIONAL

This one from the ABS-CBN Website:

Willie even related how he and his staff painstakingly prepared for the anniversary. “Very hands on po ako sa show, pati stage pinakialaman ko kasi concerned ako sa mga nanay na sumasali at umaakyat sa stage. Kasi pamilya ang bawat bisita. Six months naming plinano at pinagisipan ang anniversary na to. Dahil para sa amin sila ang bida, sila ang magcecelebrate.... [I'm very hands on when it comes to the show (Wowowee). I even monitor the progress of the stage since mothers who join the contest has to climb up. I treat them all as family. We planned this anniversary for six months. Because they (the contestants) are the stars of the show, they are the ones who celebrate...]"

Well, so much for six months of planning.

I find it a bit too contradicting to his "I am just merely the game show host" statement. I pity Willie. He doesn't know whether to distance himself from the mess or embrace it. He's caught between upholding his image as a person who truly cares for the poor or just a game show host who gets paid for doing what he's doing. Maybe he should realistically look at the situation. It's really hard if you start believing your own press.

One thing that's been wracking my mind is the other station. They have a similar contest. The prize is the same. But how come I don't hear people praising them as helping the poor as loudly as Wowowee? I mean, they're the top noon show and all. Maybe they need more marketing people...

Or maybe they're just a game show giving away one million pesos...

The C at's right. It all boils down to ad revenue. You can't disguise profit as a charitable practice. It's either you're giving it away freely or you're profiting from giving things away. I remember the show Kapwa Ko, Mahal Ko (I love my brethren). Now that's a charity show. Everyday at three pm on channel 7, my grandfather would watch that show. Since we only had one tv set then, I would once in awhile watch with him. I'm not sure now but I think it's still on air. The show is cut and dry, interview people in need and see if they can help thru medical or financial assistance. They didn't have to guess where the winning box, bag, or whatever is. No dancing girls in the background. They didn't have to dance or sing or make a fool of themselves on TV. There was no hulabaloo about it. It's that simple. And it's called CHARITY.

Until now, I remember Rosa Rosal, Orly Mercado and Doctors Picache and Talusan. That show propelled Orly to the Senate, instilled Rosa with countless honors and as for Doctors Talusan and Picache? I don't know.

Maybe they were part of the shortlist of Envoys for the Department of Tourism...

Lone Wold and Cub to be a movie

Paramount and the Mutual Film Company have tapped Darren Aronofsky to develop and direct a live-action adaptation of "Lone Wolf and Cub," the Kazuo Koike-created graphic novel collection.

The 28-volume series has sold 15 million copies worldwide.

Tale revolves around a disgraced 17th century samurai who travels around Japan as an assassin for hire as he tries to clear his family's name. His companion is his 3-year-old son, whose mother has been killed. Originated in Japan, the series has been published in the U.S. by Dark Horse Comics

Wow. I remember the japanese series (it was called Samurai ng Shogun here on Channel 13). I even saw the second to the last episode where he faces the Shogun with his sword broken in two. I never got to see the last episode, maybe that's why I ended up like this...

Oh and there were at least two Lone Wolf and Cub movies. Japanese movies dubbed in english so hopefully this will come out as good as those...

"Voltron: Defender of the Universe" is coming to the big screen. Veteran producer Mark Gordon has teamed with music producer Pharrell Williams, World Events Prods. and producers Mark Costa and Ford Oelman to make a big-budget feature of the 1980s giant robot kids TV series and toy sensation. The World Events "Voltron" animated TV series debuted in 1984, about at the same time as Hasbro's Transformers toy line, igniting a morphing robot phenomenon. The story being developed will be based on the 1980s series about five maverick explorer-pilots who must travel to the planet Arus to learn how to operate Voltron, a giant mechanical warrior formed by five smaller robots.

Ok since Transformers the Movie is in development, it's a no brainer to see this one do the same thing. Although, a live action Voltes V would cream the whole competition.

*ACK!* I meant Lone Wolf and Cub. I was just too sleepy to check spelling. I can't change the title now since it'll screw up the RSS Feed... Sorry about that
